So we're going on a cruise in a few weeks and I have to find something to wear for formal night. Jane and I went looking today and everything was not so garment friendly. They were froofy and sparkly and pink and Jane said, "Please get an un-modest one. I'm sewious."
Happy Holidays!

Yes, what to wear it's always a difficult thing to accomdate the g's. I am so proud that you didn't give in the child pressure. We all know how hard that can be. You could always wear a little fancy sweater or pashmini over your dress to help with the coverage. Especially because it will be cool and breezy at night on the ship. On our cruise I wore a black dress (boring I know) but then glammed it up with jewelery and a cool pashmini. Just an idea
Oh - I know that challenge too well. I hope I never have to buy an evening gown again!
Where you going on a cruise? I want to go!
Thanks for your wonderful words of wisdom -- I loved how you said that the biggest blessing we can give our kids is the HABIT of gospel living. I think that is the biggest blessing we can give ourselves too - because like you said, eventually we'll get to the 7th dip!
I miss you and LOVE keeping up on your life!
How about the first orange one with lots of cleavage and the coat from the purple one? Hot! Formal wear is a nightmare. There's just no getting around the frump.
Target.com of course. They have TONS of fabulous dresses, nearly all under $50. Once you pull up dresses, I would click on: Issac Mizarhi, party dresses, and little black dress. Skip the formal section, it is mostly ugly bridemaid types.
Scoop of chocolate, scoop of vanilla, don't waste my time. :)
Good luck! I just went on a cruise to Panama and couldn't find much garment worthy either...just had to wear a shirt and skirt that were lacey and ruffly (it was cute). It was fine though. Some ladies were in slacks! You have all varities of clothing. Have fun!
I've got a lovely Jr. Miss dress I'd be happy to send you... other than that... get some of those black palatzo pants (all the rage this season) a black or white top to tuck in and a huge belt to go around that little waste of yours. Then wear fancy earings. That way you don't spend dough on something you only wear once... good adivce but every year for D's Christmas party I freak out about what I'm going to wear, buy something and then never wear it again. I have a problem. (actually make it a black top - than you avoid looking like one of the waiters. Where are you cruizing to? D and I are also off next week... 10th anniversary to celebrate. Is that what you're doing?
Oh try the Vera Wang line at Kohls called Simply Vera. I am not sure about the prices but I've heard the clothes are darling and dressy. I have not seen them yet though.
Just another thought.
Go to shadeclothing.com and click on "summer sales" and then on the "basic black" collection. Their stuff is on some great sales right now. I am thinking of getting me that white number with the black flowers. . . only $50 and they are having a 10% off orders of $50 or more.
I have one of their basic black dresses and it is really nice (just in case you were wondering).
Have you tried JCPenney.com? They have a surprising number of modest and cute formal dresses and skirt/top combos. Their prices are pretty reasonable too! Dying to hear more about your cruise...and more of Jane's wisdom ;)
When are we going to get you guys to Colorado for a visit??
I have a wedding tomorrow, and am having the same problem. I ended up making one, want me to send it to you when I'm done with it?? I'm SURE Argentine mail would get it there in time. ha ha
Hey speaking of the cruise. When are you guys going to be in San Antonio. We keep getting mixed up on the dates!
Your comments about Goldilocks and bathroom playdate on Denae's blog were hilarious. Could Ash bring the dress from Adr. when she comes home in October? Can't remember when you are going.
Go for something simple and inexpensive, in black then go crazy with accessories and hair. When we went on a cruise a few years back I just work a simply cut white knit top with a long black skirt, but i did my hair up and pulled out my rhinestone jewelry and heels from my pageant queen days. I fit right in.
I read this entry yesterday and spent some time last night musing on how different you (and so many other modern LDS moms) are from the LDS moms I knew growing up.
You are fun, hip (is hip even a hip word anymore?) fashionable and never seem frazzled in any way (as a mom I realize that you probably are - but it doesn't show!).
Growing up here in the Valley, very near where the Temple is today, the moms of my Mormon friends never seemed to have a moment to spare away from their duties as wife and mother. They were always mending something, grinding wheat, baking bread, hanging clothes to dry...
I don't mean to say they were bad in anyway, they were, sometimes, an example of the mom I WISHED I had. But the reality of their large families often caused them to focus so much on others they forgot to focus on themselves once in a while. But they were never fashionable! LOL.
Good luck finding your dress. I have to agree with Ilene that the dresses at ShadeClothing.com are cute!
What about the cute little shift dresses, there are plenty with short sleeves, long enough to cover your garments and some are cool silky prints, some sparkly and hit about the knee....should work. Look in the hip, young girls department, forever 21 or places like that....do not go into Granny sections of stores ever again!
