Components of a Consistent Exercise Routine

or...the things that help me workout every day:

1. A deep fear of my calorie intake completely overtaking my calorie outtake and my "medium-sized girl" status being promoted upward. ( I know people are supposed to workout for the love of it and all that--and I do--but really, I work out every day because I LOVE LOVE LOVE to eat and this is my best form of weight control.)
2. My MP3 player.
We've had to re-purchase it 3 times due to one door-slamming incident and 2 thieverys, but luckily it gets cheaper every time we buy it...(down from a whopping $40). Want to know what's on it? Here are the first five songs that come up, with no manipulating to make my music selection look cooler: "If I had a million dollars" Bare Naked Ladies, "I drove all night" Celine Dion, "Irreplaceable" Beyonce, "This Love" Maroon Five, "Maria" Blondie. Wow, that was pretty unembarrassing, minus the Celine Dion (but I love that song).

3. A town that has the BEST running and biking trails.

(that's really my town, about 2 blocks away from my house.)

4. My nice running shoes.
We are not gear people. As in, if it requires stuff to do it, we borrow it, substitute it or go without...if at all possible. However, last Christmas, my nice husband bought me some very good Asics and they have made such a difference.
5. Variety...in a week I do Pilates, a cardio weight training class, running and stationary equipment. It is so much more enjoyable when I know I don't have to do the same thing I did yesterday.

6. A gym exactly 1 mile away.
(that's not my car, you can tell because it's not pitch black and 5 am, blech.)
7. A running partner who's lived in Seattle and so she stands outside my door (at 6 am) thinking I am going to come running even though it was hurricaning outside. She's also a little bit faster than me, so it pushes me. And she's planning to vote for Hillary Clinton, so we have a lot to talk about while we run. (Let's not tell her I posted this picture of her first thing in the morning ...although that's what she looks like every time we run together, so it's a very accurate picture for the post.)

8. Really good books, that I read while I Precor or Recumbant Bike away. Those are my favorite workout days, obviously.

See...look at me all ready to work out:
(Me, prepping to run with Ryan and brother Matt.)

(I realize this wasn't the most interesting post. Did you want me to give you a play by play on the Second Grade music program that we went to today? I didn't think so. This is all I got.)

I desperately want a Precor in my house. There's something so magnificent about them. That and a spinning bike. Can you tell I miss the gym? I used to go about 4 times a week until we moved and I said goodbye to all my gym buddies with tears in my eyes. I just couldn't rationalize it driving the diesel F250 truck ALL the way there. I now make do with my eliptical and my 5 year old ALWAYS there with me. Ahhhh the gym. I miss it so.

My favorite is doing precor with my Ipod on while watching The price is Right on mute but reading the subtitles. It's heaven.

Wow, you are good! Speaking of calories, I miss those Sunday night desserts at your house. Mmmm, I love food, too.

You are so good about working out. You even went running, in the heat, while visiting us here in Arizona. That takes committment!

If I hadn't just joined the gym 3 weeks ago, this post would have made me feel really guilty that I am just a lazy bum at home eating bon-bons.

However, with a spin and a yoga class under my belt just for today, I feel a little better.

(My friend I work out with wears one of those things that tells her how many calories she burns and for our 1 hr spin class today she burned 1,000 calories! - I like to think I did, too.)

Isn't it cold at 5 am? Did you neglect to mention that working out hurts?
I feel as though this is a little braggy. Not only do you work out, you also have fun gadgets, shoes, and people who support you.
And you're skinny and you cook.

I'm with nor. I'd like to see a photo of your cellulite or something. If you have it.

I bought exercise clothes today online. Does that count? I worked my fingers out.

Jessica said...

IT WASN'T SUPPOSED TO BE BRAGGY!!
(wah!--and plus, there is SO much cellulite.)

Lorena said...

It wasn't braggy...we all just realize that we are not worthy...you could post these alleged cellulite pictures to make us all feel better.

Just a thought.

Jessica said...

I'll get right on that, Lorena.

Lorena said...

OK, I'll just wait and sit here in front of the computer with bated breath.

My only consistent part of my very consistent workout routine is my big old heinie that chases me around. And I agree about the variety. If it's Monday it must be spinning, Tuesday cardio combo class, Weds. cardio and trainer, Thurs. run the loop, friday day off, Sat. long cardio up the mountain, Sunday day off. It sucks and let's hear it for the "medium" girls.

Paige said...

It wasn't braggy. We know you hate it even though you convince yourself you don't.

My goal for the next week or so is to start contemplating an early bed time and and earlier wake up time so I can actually have time to do my work out before the kiddos need me. I should probably just DO it but I need to mentally prepare myself to get up before the kids wake up. I am NOT a morning person. I think four years of perfect attendance to 6am seminary did that to me (no, I'm not lying. I have a certificate and everything. There was no way I was not going to BYU; or the celestial kingdom, for that matter).

I'm finally learning all this blog stuff. Thanks for the workout info. I'm going to copy your songs. I've been wanting some new ones for my running cd. love you guys.

Today I am not working out because my gym clothes don't fit - I cannot bring myself to buy maternity gym clothes, I cannot, I cannot, I cannot.

I love to run. But mainly I do it from keeping my butt, thighs and stomach from expanding. But now I have a reason for the gut, but I still like to work out (when I am not puking). That's not braggy it's just true. Some people like it and some don't.

Ok I have to leave a comment here. I love love love If I Had A Million Dollars. Vj makes fun of me so I'm glad to hear someone else has it on their workout playlist.

Bridget said...

Love your playlist. I have all those songs on my ipod minus the Celine Dion I am proud to say. Although I do have Avril Lavigne which may be equally as embarrassing.

I used to be all about the borrowing of gear until I started doing triathlons. Now I am a gear junkie. If you also like to bike and swim I would be happy to talk you into trying one. :)

I've been blaming that fact that I don't work out on the gym because they don't have daycare. But let's be honest here... I have to work out in the morning because if not, getting ready twice is waaaay too annoying, and I'm too lazy to get up early enough to fit it in.

Can you teach me self-discipline?

Christie said...

Love your playlist, too. I don't know what's up with you and Celine, but I forgive you anyway.

I am just like you - I exercise so that I can eat bad and not gain weight. I think if I just slowed on the eating a bit, I'd probably drop like 40 pounds. Or so I like to tell myself.

Jessica thank you for the info. I need to switch up what I do.. .maybe that would help me to be more excited. Also good job for doing it!

I am also a fan of exercise. I only go 3 days a week 1-1/2 hrs per. 45 min cardio, 30 min weights, 15 min pretending to do abs/talking.

I have yet to motivate myself to get out of bed early for exercise. (but if I had a running partner that made me pancakes . . .)

For the non-exercisers:
Hello? The only time of day without kids! And have you heard of endorphins? They are like legal drugs!

I think it is all about #7. Find someone who you think is more reliable than you, and here's the trick, she's gotta think the same thing as you. Then add more partners and you can have a whole posse. Think of the conversation possibilities!

I totally run to eat, is there any other reason?

Wanna meet in ST. George in Jan and run a half marathon anyone?

zeeny said...

Wow...you're my hero. I want to love exercising as well but havn't got to that point yet. I love how I feel when I am done but am not always the best at motivating myself. I ran over 70 miles last month and only lost two yes 2 pounds. That shows you how much I like my food intake!

I HATE exercising with a passion. It is not fun in any way shape or form for me. It is overrated. I KNOW I need to do it and a huge sign is me running to my mailbox and getting winded. Pathetic. I just HATE to exercise. I would much rather lay on my couch and watch The Office! I even have a treadmill I can run on while I watch The Office, but I don't even do that!!!!!! Someone help!!!!!!!!

Penny said...

tHey, I think that would be cool for you to blog about the 2nd grade music night. A little video of them dancing to that one song (how cute was that!). At least THAT wouldn't make me feel guilty.

Thanks a lot "medium girl".

Erika said...

love this one... I'be been catching up on you and 1)you're exactly the same. 2) I feel like we just picked up where we last left off 3) have the most adorable kids 4) inspire my blog. you go girl.

I'm embarrassed to say that my workout playlist probably needs a little revamping.

I kind of like running and working out to rap and other naughtiness ya know, just for the beat.

Have you SEEN the Celine Dion in Vegas. Quite remarkable. (that was braggy of me)

Jake said...

I love love love to exercise...spinning and running/walking are my favorites. However unless it happens first thing in the morning, I find that it is almost impossible to squeeze a workout in.

Unfortunate, because eating can always be squeezed into my schedule.

marta said...

i need to get back on the wagon with my exercise schedule. i do love HAVING DONE it.. doing it though is another story. but i do think the audio books is a genius idea! thanks.. and keep up the good work.

zeeny said...

I know I already commented but I had another thought...I know you aren't bragging but I think you deserve to. How many people are dedicated to something in their life...not many! When I run everyday I feel like I have earned the right to brag. You go girl!
