How (besides the usual ways) I know I'm REALLY pregnant

(Sorry, Paige, unfortunately, I couldn't find any pictures of my Emma pregnancy, when I resembled a whale. I did, however, find one of you and me, with our first boys...)

1. I can tell if my kids have really brushed their teeth, even if they haven't come in my room.

2. Chocolate doesn't sound that good. (It still tastes good, but sometimes I can actually forget about that and forgo.)

3. I (queen of homecooking) have not made a meal for 5 weeks.

4. I don't really want to talk about how my pants don't fit, even though the baby is the size of a strawberry and I've gained a whole 3 lbs.

5. I can't open my fridge because the stench is hideous.

6. I can't eat anything that's been a)prepared in my house or b) in my mouth previously. (After 6 weeks of this, there isn't a whole lot left to choose from.)

7. I've actually skipped workouts. (Anyone who knows me well, knows this is completely shocking.)

8. Blogging annoys me.

9. My daily 45 minute naps have doubled. And I don't even look forward to them, because I know after I wake up, I am consigned to nausea for the next 7 hours.

10. I cannot remember ANYTHING. Really. I've never had pregnancy brain before, but honestly, I forget every church assignment I have, Gabe's soccer practice EVERY WEEK, and my husband's temple recommend when I met him yesterday, 30 minutes after he called and specifically asked me. And I am NOT a forgetter.

11. Every other blog post has some mind-numbingly boring reference to My Great Expectation. (sorry.)

During my pregnancies, my husband called me many things (most very nice) but the most memorable was "the Nose". I could Smell. For example, if anyone came with in 100 feet of the house with chinese takeout, they would get to experience full gestational wrath.

My maternity wish for you is that all chinese leftovers stay miles from your nose.

Love that picture of us! Each one of my pregnancies is marked by a distinct smell experience that I had before I even knew I was pregnant. With Sol I was on the bus in SF and couldn't handle the smell, with the girls it was pizza, and with Bea my favorite poncho became too sticky. Jeff called me the supersmeller for a reason.

And this is why Mark calls Ellie the bloodhound and wants her to go hunt for truffles.

You and Paige are such cute pregnant ladies!

I am impressed with how you can tell if your kids have brushed their teeth or not! Speaking of breath...when I am pregnant...NO ONE is allowed to even so much as breathe on me...for some reason it makes me want to hurl.

This is the part where I say, "Hang in there!" I hope it doesn't bug you to have me say that because I remember specifically thinking when I am pregnant and people say that to me, "Yeah, I'll have to hang in there because I have no other choice."

I hope it lifts soon...Like in 5 minutes ;) and don't apologize for posting about your pregnancy...we all want to hear!

You are such a cute blogger and it's making me excited to meet you. My random pregnancy thing seems to be that everything smells like sphagetti sauce...but it's not a good thing.

Nice clogs, Paige. Payless.

I'm sorry you are having such a touch time, but I secretly love these miserable pregnancy posts because they are better than birth control.

I had started reading a book when I was pregnant with Maren. I was so nauseated I didn't even want to read. That's pretty sad. But anyway, years later I picked the book up again to read it. When I opened the book and smelled it (you know how every book has a smell) a wave of nausea hit me. I totally reverted back. I felt like a Pavlov dog who was involuntarily salivating.

And yes, cute picture of you and Paige.

Hang in there Jessica. My mom calls pregnancy nausea "that dark brown feeling." And I don't know why I thought I'd tell you that....

Annie said...

Sorry. Lauren's right. Saying "hang in there" isn't that helpful. How about "take care of yourself"?

When I have been sick during my only 2 pregnancies (you are a rock star going for #5), my husband keeps a mental tally of how much the sickness is costing the unborn and deducts money from the college fund. Isaac's fund will be in negative figures for a long time. :)

I'm crossing my fingers you'll have a nausea reprieve for blogapalooza.

Lauren in GA said...

I forgot to say that I love how you referred to your pregnancy as your, "Great Expectation" Ya still got it, girlie...even clever and witty while feeling miserable.

Jake said...

My one and only pregnancy experience was totally nauseating. I just remember crying and crying because I knew I HAD to eat...but nothing sounded good. So sorry.

Lisa-Marie said...

I'll be sure to brush my teeth before blogapalooza.

I'm so sorry you're feeling awful. That's not fun at all. I can't wait to meet you next week.

Nonteethbrushers should be banned from the radius of all prego women. Seriously, make me hurl. I worked with a super smelly nonteethbrusher (ever) who also wore the same pants every day. Serious STENCH.

Thanks again for reminding me why I am done.

okay I hate to harp on this - but are you having twins? I will not be surprised if you find out there are two little Romneys in there - and I will expect to be mentioned in your blog entitled "Double Trouble"

Annemarie said...

Oh, so sorry. I couldn't even STAND the taste in my own mouth, let alone my kids breath! And the smells...there was always a highly scented candle burning in my Dr's office and I thought I was going to lose it every time I had an appt. Hang in there!!!

So cute! Being pregnant is not my favorite, that's for sure! I'm impressed that you can even get a blog post out, much less commenting.

Have fun at Blogapolooza! Tell everyone to take a shower before they come. ;-)

This sounds so much like my life right now, especially the blogging part. I'm so impressed that you are actually still posting. I haven't posted anything new for 3 weeks - my brain's just not up to it!

Ilene said...

I'm with you on the hating blogging thing. Not good when you are 20 weeks pregnant. I thought it would wear off.

I'm sitting in a hotel room in boise right now. Happy to be here but the move really hasn't hit me yet.

You better remember to pick me up next week... I will call and remind you 15 minutes before you leave.

I thought about the twin thing too, it really is weird that you have been ultra sick this time. That would be so cool except you would have to hire a nanny!

Good call not posting a picture. I looked back at my belly pictures and thought, was I REALLY that big? It funny how your eyes protect you to not really see how big you are so you don't get MORE depressed when you are 10 months + pregnant!

Sorry I don't have any of your maternity clothes! I didn't use any of yours last pregnancy.

Bekah said...

Jessica! I started my own blog! Check it out and be the first commenter!

I hope you feel better real soon! Just remember you have really silly, smart, funny, cute children and I'm excited for your next little one! I love you!

Your favorite sister,
Bekah

Yeah why is our sense of smell increased so insanely when we are pregnant. I can't stang the smell of curry and we lived in an apartment community with a LOT of people who cooked with curry during my last pregnancy. I was miserable!

Jenibelle said...

I have no witty things to say, no advise. Too tired from the weekend and I'm not expecting anything great.

I am just so impressed that despite HOW sick you get, you had more than one or two. I think you need my Wonderwoman outfit. (even pregnant it would probably look better on you!)

Cami said...

Oh, we love to hear how you're doing. Just don't get so annoyed with blogging that you don't.
I hope the joy comes back soon!

Ok, so you have no idea who I am, but I found you through a friend. My name is Cassie and I'm in Bonney Lake if that helps. Question. How do you get your blog to take up the whole page? I am new to this blogging thing and I cannot, for the life of me, figure out how to break out of the center column restriction. So, if you actually get to read this comment #26, and you have a moment, please email me (lcprsmp@comcast.net). I can invite you to my blog or just take your much appreciated advice and learn a bit about this blog world. Thanks so much- and love your post! We're done after baby #5 and I can totally symphathize with you!

Good luck, I have found that my pregnancy nose never goes away, I always have it now how said is that.

Oh Jessica I'm so sorry...if you weren't so darn funny I'd feel even sorrier but I'm really enjoying your blog! HEHEHE! We have the same neighbor with the TOY jeep...I feel the same way as my kid goes careening around the corner on the side of a cliff and is looking back at me and not ahead...sigh.

Jess - (did I use that knick name properly?!) Congrats! I know I'm a little slow in knowing. Josh (who actually finds time to read blogs while I slave and pack up his office among other things) told me a few weeks ago. (I haven't touched blogger for several weeks until now because of the whole moving thing). I'm so sorry you are so sick. I know this isn't true doctrine but I'm convinced mothers will be exalted with or without men because of what they go through in pregnancy and child birth!

I'm with you on the chocolate -- for some reason it just doesn't appeal to me when I'm pregnant. Unfortunately, I seem to make up for it as soon as the baby is out.

Will I still get to see you this summer? Or has the baby changed those plans? I will be in Fresno June 15th.

Carie said...

You are clever and entertaining even while you are sick.

3 lbs? Is that seriously all you got? At that stage in my pregnancy I am well on my way to 20lbs, easy.

AMY said...

Yay! I'm not the only one who doesn't fit in pants when my baby is the size of... oh... a pea? The good news, at least for me was, you gain the least amount of weight your third trimester. I'm totally a "pound" counter. Just something to look forward too.

Brigitta said...

Not to add salt to your wounds, but I am so happy to not be pregnant anymore!! But just remember the prize at the end is the best ever!!!! I am not sure what it is that makes me love this baby so much, maybe because he is my last, maybe because I don't have toddlers climbing all over me (everyone is at school at this house) maybe because he so darn sweet! I wish you good healthy soon. Hopefully you aren't sick the whole time. I am sending 3 pair of maternity pants and a swimsuit with Celia so make room for them in your suitcase. Enjoy!!! happy travels and have fun!!

I'll have to keep these symptoms in mind for when I finally get pregnant. Some people dread the symptoms... I look forward to them. Does that make me a glutton for punishment?

"8. Blogging annoys me."

THANK YOU!!! When I was first pregnant I think I posted like once a week if that because I was just so sick! My mom kept saying "You need to keep up with your blog like Jessica... Blah, Blah, Blah."

Glad to know you are human!

SO interesting to hear how pregnancy affects your daily life...so sorry for the not so fun parts. I'm sure it will all be a distant memory after the cutie arrives. =)

I'm back and forth right now about having #4. That made me come right back to "No, thanks." I HATE being pregnant. Way to keep blogging, though, even though it annoys you. Great for the rest of us.

jessica said...

Even with all of this pregnancy crap, you still manage to do a ton! I know it doesn't feel like you are...but you are. Three callings, four kids, husband with crazy calling (is he still in EQ too) give yourself some slack.

Oh and I'll bring you some dinner next week when you get back.

crystal said...

Ohhhhhh, I SO hear you on #3, #6 & #10. I haven't cooked--I mean REALLY cooked--since I was first pregnant.

That was 7 months ago.

Will I ever cook again? Do I care???

It was so fun to meet at Blogapalooza!! This post made me giggle. Beck's only 5 months old and I HAVE NOT FORGOTTEN. I loved #10 about pregnancy brain.

That was a problem for #'s 3-5. Luckily, I do eventually get my brain back. Or most of it anyway...

Hi Jessica
I should email you but I don't have all my contacts transferred to my new laptop yet. I loved your BP gift. We actually had just bought an Ebelskiver pan a week ago! We need a good recipe and you said you had one you loved. Do you remember where in your archives it would be? I would love to get it. I really don't know why we didn't talk. Yes, BOO on us. It was such a fun night but so hard to talk to everyone.

I needed to spend a little more time with my dad so I had slipped out a little bit early Thurs. I am still having issues with his wife but I am dealing with it better. yeah for me. :)

i'm one of those people who don't enjoy being prego... other than the sweet reward in the end, everything else about it sucks. i feel for you. a heightened sense of smell is the worse.
