In basketball, this would be called an AAIIR-ball.

I come from a family of sports-watchers. I have lovely memories of laying on the floor of our Fresno, CA rancher and cheering my little heart out for the Celtics, of sitting on my parents bed in Tracy, CA as my dad told me step by step why Tiger Woods' win was so amazing, of the golden years of the 49ers when our Mormon boy was leading the charge. Oh, and don't even get me started about the holy event that was the Olympics. Cancel all activities...the entire Sherrill family was busy for 3 weeks every 4 years.

That's why the following comment had me shaking my head in disbelief:

In response to a reference I made to Ryan about yesterday's cool Super Bowl, Emma said, "What's a Super Bowl?"

(bad enough, I realize, but just hang on...)

Gabe replied: "It's like the World Legends, except with football."

Now, I'm assuming he meant World Series. But for the oldest boy in my house to NOT HAVE ANY IDEA what the correct name of that major sports event was...well, it's a little embarrassing.

My husband is one of the most physically fit men I know. He runs, bikes, swims, plays sports any chance he gets and he includes our kids in all of these activities. Just don't ask him to watch any of these things on TV. The sound of the cheering plus the time-not-spent-being-productive...he just can't do it. Add in a "No TV on Sunday" rule and you get kids who don't know what the Super Bowl or the World Legend is.

Nate, Matt, Grandpa? You have work to do.

Well, at least you don't have to hear your husband yell at the T.V. when the Virginia Tech Hokies are playing football (or any college team is playing football).

Sometimes I just want to yell back at him, "DEAR, ya know what...they can't hear ya... But I can, so for the love of all that is sane and peaceful~ would you please pipe down!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

I like the picture you included :)

Trust me, the other end of the spectrum is no good either.

My husband watches soccer (worldwide), baseball, football, basketball, rugby, track and field...

oh and he asks me to make sandwiches.... LOL

I watch none of it. My son is as bad as me. I asked yesterday if he wanted to help me or watch the game. He responded "what game?".

That's so funny! We have the no TV on Sunday rule too but there's a Super Bowl exception clause in the fine print. We only watched about 15 minutes. Just long enough I think for Nathan to have some bonding time with his sons.

My husband has all but given up watching sports. He just doesn't have the time...but there was a little Superbowl party last night and he made guacamole.

What a nice picture! Makes me almost want to have another child if they could all look that nice someday :-) And I don't go insane along the way.... I don't know. i have to think about it some more... :-)

That's funny, my husband is an in betweener. which I love. Sports were always on when I was growing up and I hated it. I felt like it consumded our household and it did. So when I got married one of the things that I loved about him was that he does not watch sports on TV. Expect when it's the playoff's and then it's only football and basketball.

I personally couldn't live with a "No TV on Sunday" rule. Well, I guess I could, but then how would I veg out with the kids while Dan's off on stake errands without a good movie or Spongebob fest?

My boys are really into football and volleyball and the cougars. Nate's a bit confused about what to yell at different events. At a local basketball game he cheered "We're going to get some
touchdowns!" He's two.

Don't worry, Emma doesn't really need to know what a Super Bowl is for at least 6 more years.

And just so you know I'm not a complete heathen, we do have a "No xbox on Sunday" rule.

We are not sports fans at all. so, it drives me crazy when one day out of the year, my husband thinks he can sit around and watch TV and do nothing else. (He claims it's for the commercials, but he can't seem to take his eyes off the TV at all.) I guess I shouldn't complain... it's only one day a year!

Your husband rocks! You got a true catch! An athletic guy who doesn't sit on his duff screaming at the TV. You lucky, lucky, girl.

My husband is pretty good, too. He just watches the dodgers and golf. He prefers to be our playing instead.

The only reason to know about this years superbowl is HOT Tom Brady! I know he ditched his kid and maybe he is a scum of the earth, but he is so damn hot that I still adore him and was rooting for him all along... (What was the family photo all about?)

Oh, that comment from Gabe is fantastic. Send him to your family during March Madness or Bowl season to get a good dose of sports familiarity.

Dan has really eased up on the sports since he started working a real job and had kids. Of course, all Duck sports are considered hallowed so we do watch those when we get the chance... Luckily he converted me into a sports fan and so the sports thing is a complete bonding experience. I even watch golf on occassion. Crazy.

Sunday sports- we typically don't watch but we do watch the Super Bowl and Dan will turn some kind of golf tourney or football game to lull him into his sunday nap.

Skinner house 2 weeks ago:

Hailey (enters the great room and the boys are all watching tv): Hey, I thought we didn't watch tv on Sunday.

Mark (my husband): This isn't tv, this is the playoffs.

Like Bridgett, we have an excemption clause for playoffs Superbowl also.

It was a GREAT game. I'm in it mostly for the food.

Jessice, we're the same. I come from and family completely and totally obsessed with sports... five brothers, and a sis that's super good and my dad played in college. SO when my kids don't know anything about them, I feel embarrassed and nervous that they will be family outcasts... but they're young still. They have lots of years ahead of them. I love that your husband thinks watching tv is too unproductive. I agree.

My husband thinks watching sports on tv is for fat sissy men who can't actually do anything. I kind of miss the veg out cheering thing, and my kids are social misfits. Oh well.

We've had a 'meshing' of households. I had no 'TV on Sundays' upbringing--hubby had 'TV runs extra long on Sundays because there are less activities to interfere' upbringing. It's quite the combo, let me tell ya! =)

That is a great family pic!

Your husband is man I can relate to. I'm always shocked when the Super Bowl is on because my husband feels obligated to watch it, but really it's all about him being able to make his baked brie and other delicious concoctions. There ain't no Doritos at that party.

Keep up the good work, Ryan.

WOW!! Now you know how I feel about my precious Red Sox. You just send Gabe over for the next world series, I'll teach him how to be a real man.
However we do record the Sunday games but check the scores on the internet before we go to bed. Kinda take the fun out of watching the whole game but I'm so impatient!

I would trade places with you in a SECOND. My boys are obsessed and get up first thing in the morning to turn on Sports Center. Count your blessings, my friend.

We too have a no TV rule on Sunday, no TV, but sports that is, .....and until the kids go to bed, .....and if you are sick, and .... and if Matt is on call ..... I guess our no TV rule isn't that strong.

i used to think your husband was witty and clever. i enjoyed his posts and his sweaters.
not anymore.

you already know i'm a celtics freak, so when they make it to the NBA championships this year, you can come over to MY house and watch it. even if it's on a sunday.

and in the next life, when your husband is competing in celestial triathalons, we can hang out in the lower kingdoms together with bird and mchale. ryan can come down once in awhile with ainge to visit us.

Why don't you send Gabe over here and my boys (Todd included) can teach him all about the "World Legends" and the Super bowl and March Madness, etc. etc....
Poor little guy!

Oooh...I'm torn. You've seen my husband during any BYU sporting activity broadcast on TV, right? Now you understand my inner conflict.

Oh, and the other crazy super BYU fan and his wife have started their blog...FINALLY!

I guess be grateful for it. I love the not TV on Suday rule; it makes it such a peaceful day, but I came from a family of serious watchers too. totally nuts about the olympics. Mike doesn't share my enthusiasm, but I'll make sure my kids get into it this year. Can't wait.

I, sometimes reluctantly, get the whole "World Legends", Super Bowl, March Madness... need I go on. Although I have a limit, another person in my household can be a little obsessed. Even I seem to get talked into picking the winners for the whole March Madness Brackets Thing.
However - I can't help but enable. I did send my husband to Dallas.

I'd be okay with that. As long as they PLAY the sports? I say, let it slide.

Hey! Just wanted to tell you that I loved running into you at the store...it was almost like a celebrity siting..I see your face and read about you all the time, but hardly ever see you!
Hope you got to wherever you were going in time!

Ahhh, to not have football on Sundays. This was a discussion my hubby and I had early on in our marriage. He is not a huge sports lover but loves his Broncos.

I asked him if there was anywhere in the scriptures that justified watching sports on Sunday. His response? "And it came to pass."

I lost that battle. :-)

Okay. John comes from a family completely OBSESSED TO THE MAX with sports. And he has 6 sisters, go figure. John has no brothers. I'm sure he was hoping to marry into a family with some manly men to talk about scores and plays of the day, but alas, he married ME and my brothers are girly men.

I got your name from Shally regarding Blogapalooza, can you email me info at melaniekirkland at gmail.com? I am really impressed with the number of comments, how do you do it? I come from a family of all girls and my husband is only into BYU sports, so I am lucky!

Oh you have no idea the variety of sports that are out there, or the number of cable channels dedicted to broadcasting them, or the necessity my husband feels to watch EVERYTHING that includes a ball. He doesn't even LIKE american football, yet he still watched the superbowl and kept calling me in the room to watch parts. LIKE I CARE! And they don't show the american commericals here, which is the only redeeming part!

And if an Argentine national team is playing ANYTHING, including bowling, he feels the need to cancel work and bishopric to watch.

It's familial, his dad reads scriptures all day except when some sporting event is being broadcast.
