And Isn't it Ironic?

So, in years past, Ryan has heard me rail against the Boo** (see below for explanation) sign:
"Seriously? Who starts this? Do we need MORE candy, MORE treats or MORE assignments (returning the favor) in our lives as the holiday/eating season begins?! I don't want to even pass this thing on!"
I've been annoyed for years at this practice. Usually, I'm watching my calories (in advance of the Thanksgiving and Christmas bingeing) and I have a hard enough time, without dealing with an EXTRA goodie plate. And my kids are starting to get enough sugar at school, church, the bank, that it's starting to pour our their ears.
So this year, when I saw this sign, I mentally rolled my eyes. "Hmph. Maybe I'll do a post, when we get 'Boo'ed', about how much I dislike this thing," I thought.
And then we never got one.
And my new "3rd Trimester Diet Plan" which mainly involves a constant stream of sugar running through my veins, mainly between the hours of 6pm and 12am, was SORELY DISRUPTED.
Where are my Boo-ers? Why, during this year of extreme sugar-consumption by me, am I not receiving my lovely Ghost poster (I even had to have a friend take pictures of hers and email it to me), the cornily-rhymed message and, most importantly, PLATE OF SUGAR?
Is this Karma for years of complaining? Is my husband hiding the Boo, knowing that every morning I regret the "3rd Trimester Diet Plan" by moaning and complaining about how much weight I'm gaining? Are their Halloweens goblins at work here?
Am I getting what I deserve?
**the Boo sign: a photocopied picture of a ghost, with a poem that instructs the receivers to hang the sign in her window (see Denae's post for anti-sign-hanging-desires) to let people know you've been boo'ed, more instructions to pass along the Halloween goodwill in the form of treats...and a plate o' goodies.

You have given me an idea! I think I'll just hang a sign in my window now and that way we won't get boo'ed because everyone will think we already were! Preventive holiday avoidance at its finest.

(I really do like Halloween but, like you, am not that fond of the treats/pass-it-on command thing. It feels too close to a chain letter. Which I always break.)

I was bummed when we were one of the first in the neighborhood to get boo'ed & then totally dropped the ball!!! We finally passed it on about six days later - we did four houses instead of two but I think it'll be slim pickings for some poor family like the Romneys down the line who get missed! Hope somebody catches the hint & leaves some sugar-y goodness on your porch.

We got booed last night. I'm going to have to run about four extra errands today. I think I'll drown my sorrows in peanut butter m&ms.

I've never been booed and while I'm sure I'd be annoyed, I'm even MORE annoyed that I've been skimmed over. pout.

I thought it was fun the first time.

Then we kept getting boo'ed even though we had the sign prominently displayed. We started recycling the treats. I'm hoping it doesn't start this year.

I think I was on the same 3rd trimester diet--and I ended up with a 10 pound 10 ouncer!

I'm sorry about the irony for you. I HATE the BOO!
I've been severly criticized by my husband for disliking this tradition, but I agree with Annie. It's a chain letter and it is just more of what I don't want...
time spent baking,
eating all the treats cuz my kids don't eat 'new' things and Cameron needs to avoid peanuts, etc.

We've never been boo'd. I'm kinda sad we haven't... but then again, we rarely even get trick or treaters either. I always end up with a ton of candy, but no one to give it to. At least this year I'm having my second trimester diet (which closely matches your third trimester diet), so I don't feel quite so bad.

There's nothing better than a 3rd Trimester Diet full of SUGAR running through one's veins!
I'm 6 months postpartum and I STILL feel like I'm on that 3rd trimester diet. ugh.
Good luck with the BOO. I'm sure now that you've blogged it, your local readers will "help" you out. Enjoy!!

I would totally BOO you if I lived by you. Mostly because I enjoy providing others a steady stream of sugar to match my own.

I haven't gotten one this year either.

Not to mention the fact that the BOO arrives 15 minutes after kids have brushed teeth and been tucked into bed! Hate it and am waiting for my doorbell to ring at any moment.

(Maybe I'll send 'em your way...)

Ironic? Yeah, I really do think...

I promise if I lived by you I would, "BOO" you on principle alone. No pregnant woman should be denied an IV drip of sugar.

I bet you get boo'ed now. Good plan?! :)

You are a scrooge. I LOVE THE BOO! My kids can't think of anything more fun than knocking and running. We think it is great and do it to like 8 families. So, if you lived by us, you'd definately have one! Hooray for Halloween!

Annie is a freakin' genius. I love getting booed, hate remembering to pass it on.

I'm printing out the fake sign now. I can't handle making a plate of cookies for anyone.

I know, start a NEW one... A grateful turkey...
Send out a list of what you LOVE about that family
and MAIL it to 'em w/ a gift card to somewhere
healthy!!
Ok, I KNOW the sugar thing starts at Halloween and goes on thru the whole season, almost grabbed the mini Baby Ruth sitting in the dress shop bowl yesterday,
but I KNOW it was a trick and one ALWAYS leads to another and pretty soon I'm going into Walmart to buy my OWN bag...
YOU on the other hand are pregnant, that's a PERFECT Halloween costume AND excuse to eat up!
Drink plenty of water and enjoy your last BIG Halloween... Send pictures, when are you due?
Just watch how all the sniffles and colds and flu-ish things start about 4 days after Halloween and go right up until New Year's Day w/ the "work out" resolution... EVERYONE knows they NEED to get to feeling better after the holiday season and Jan. is a perfect time!!!

What is wierd is that I have THE EXACT SAME BOO SIGN on my door.

Utah must have started the whole BOO tradition....

And how can you NOT like getting free treats????

There's nothing worse than receiving unsolicited sugar with the obligation to turn around and give it to someone else...

unless it's feeling left out because everyone else got theirs.

Here's hoping someone hears your cries and 'boo's' you pronto.

Who bakes for the Boo? I just pass on a bag of candy. I'm scared to get baked treats on my doorstep. What if they baked them with poop?

I can't believe the Romney's haven't been Booed. That seems just wrong. By the way, I can totally picture Ryan's ranting on the Boo.

I am still wearing my third tri-mester diet around my belly. Problem is that the cravings for all things sweet and creamy have yet to cease. But at least I'm not rubbing the couch cushions any more.

Your sugar in the veins diet sounds great to me... I can't believe you've not been boo'd this year! now that you've written about it, maybe you'll get it- let us know!

either they don't do that where we live, or nobody really likes us.

are you needing me to send you sugar?

I hate the boo thing too! Either we don't get "booed" and then my kids feel bad that we didn't get "picked" OR if we have gotten booed then I feel guity that I haven't passed the boo on! Stupid thing anyway!
